Implications for Social Work Practice During and After COVID-19

Webinar Two:        From Surviving to Thriving: Pandemic Challenges Facing Children and Families

Children and their families are experiencing a multitude of challenges during the COVID-19 Pandemic. These unique situations include social isolation, school closure, limited outlets for physical activities, relationship disruption with friends and extended family members and overall general concerns for staying safe and healthy.  These changes are often challenges, and may lead to an increase of stress, anxiety, fear, anger and even depression.  For children these may come out in both outer physical behavior changes like acting out or disruptive episodes or may also be more repressed reactions that may present as poor sleeping and bad dreams  Parents may be juggling their own concerns regarding these issues; as well as more financial challenges with work loss or changes, as well working from home while children are home for longer periods than previously experienced.

Social Workers will often be part of the front line assisting children and families to cope with these unique challenges, from case workers and care managers to therapists and school social workers. This two-and-a-half hour webinar will explore these unique challenges facing children and families due the COVID-19 crisis, as well as identifying resources and activities to assist them.  The ultimate goal is to help the children and families we work with to navigate these challenges from survival experiences to increased opportunities to thrive. 

 Learning Objectives:

1.  Explore the unique challenges facing children and families due to COVID-19. 

2.  Identify at least three resources for children and families specifically developed for these Pandemic circumstances..

3.  Learn and be able to implement at least two therapeutic activities to assist children and families during times of stressful challenges.

About Our Presenter: Jamie Lynn Langley, LCSW, RPT-S has been a social worker and therapist for over thirty years, first in Murfreesboro and then Smyrna, Tn. She worked in community mental health for the majority of that time, entering private practice in late 2016.  Ms. Langley (Jamie) specializes in working with children, teens and their families; most often using play and other expressive therapies, both indoors as well as outside in nature whenever the opportunity arises. Most recently her clinical work has transferred to telehealth services due to the COVID-19 health crisis. Ms. Langley (Jamie) is a co-founder and current president of the Tennessee Association for Play Therapy and enjoys supervising therapists towards their Registered Play Therapist (RPT) credential. In addition to her clinical practice, Ms. Langley (Jamie) teaches adjunct at two universities and has also delved into writing projects.  Her most recent publication was a chapter on "Utilizing Games to Build Resilience with Children Impacted by Divorce" in the 3rd edition of Game Play: The Therapeutic Use of Games with Children and Adolescents (2020) by Charles Schaefer, Ph.D. and Jessica Stone, Ph. D. (eds.) Ms. Langley (Jamie) is also a frequent presenter where she enjoys sharing her clinical experience and the healing powers of play, creativity and nature.
