 Diversity Awareness and Cultural Competence - Seeking Strengths in All Cultures
This workshop will increase participants’ awareness of, and sensitivity to, cultural differences.  It also will enhance the assessment skills that today’s social workers and human service providers need in order to more effectively serve diverse populations.  Activities will focus on helping participants become more aware of how personal values and diversity affect assessment, planning and service delivery, as well as point out the importance of seeking strengths in all cultures.

Learning Objectives:
Participants in this workshop will:

  • Develop key clinical and community-building skills to aid in their practice,
  • Understand cultural diversity and its impact on assessment, planning and service delivery,
  • Recognize strengths that exist in each culture, and

  • Increase cultural competence in service delivery.

About Our Presenter:  Bo Walker, LCSW, DCSW is a former member of the NASW National Ethics Committee and served on the NASW Code of Ethics Review Task Force. He currently serves as Director of Social Services at Moccasin Bend Mental Health Institute in Chattanooga, TN. Walker has over 40 years of experience in a diverse variety of clinical, administrative and academic functions and has presented numerous workshops on social work ethics, cultural competence and other behavioral health topics. He has been recognized locally, statewide and nationally for leadership and outstanding practice in social work and mental health. He received a BA degree in Sociology from Warren Wilson College and a Master of Science in Social Work from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.

While the NASW understands that emergencies do occur, once a participant has been registered and is expected to attend a scheduled NASW TN Chapter workshop/event, the NASW TN Chapter has factored their attendance into costs already absorbed by the Chapter. Once a participant has registered and is expected to attend a scheduled Chapter workshop or event our cancellation policy is as follows:

•Cancellations received via e-mail 7days or more prior to the event will receive a full refund.

• Cancellations received 6-2 days in advance of the event shall be refunded to the participant with $25 deducted for processing.

• Cancellations received less than 2 days in advance of the event will NOT be refunded.

• Any “no shows” that have not provided advance notice will not be issued refunds or the option to apply the fee to a future scheduled workshop
