Presentation title:

Police Responses to Individuals Living with Mental Illness

Presenter: Melissa Hirschi, PhD, LCSW, Assistant Professor, University of Memphis

Police officers have, by default, become the first line of contact for severely troubled individuals who once might have gone to a community clinic or mental health crisis center. Officers are called upon to respond to crisis calls that present them face-to-face with complex issues relating to mental illness. This problem has become worse in recent years as state and local governments have cut back on funding for mental health services.

Many police departments have put in place a community partnership where mental health consumers and family members collaborate with social service professionals and law enforcement to train police officers in how to deal with people living with psychiatric illnesses.

Presentation objectives:

Attendees will

·         Explore the factors that impact the issue of people living with a mental illness encountering law enforcement officers.

·         Examine how being in a crisis situation with law enforcement involvement is perceived by people with mental illnesses and by the police officers who respond.

·         Learn about effective interventions that help the criminal justice system respond appropriately when dealing with mentally ill people, and interventions that help mentally ill people receive treatment.
