This workshop is designed to cover the basic changes and practical implications when using DSM-5 in mental health assessment, treatment planning and evidence-based practice strategy. Particular emphasis is placed on examining what was expected in the DSM-IV/DSM-IV-TR, and how it relates to DSM-5. Stress is placed on understanding the rationale for the changes; how it relates to diagnostic coding and billing; as well as, the rationale and the implications these changes can have on practice.

      Over-view of Specific Mental Health Conditions and Implications for Practice Strategy

 

This workshop is designed to cover the basic changes and practical implications when using DSM-5 in mental health assessment, treatment planning and evidence-based practice strategy.  Particular emphasis is placed on examining what was expected in the DSM-IV/DSM-IV-TR, and how it relates to DSM-5. Stress is placed on understanding the rationale for the changes; how it relates to diagnostic coding and billing; as well as, the rationale and the implications these changes can have on developing best practices, treatment planning and overall treatment strategy. An overview of selected diagnostic categories will be examined stressing the diagnostic-assessment, and how it is linked to behavior-based practice strategy.  Selected disorders across the lifespan that will be covered include: the Addictive Disorders, Schizophrenia Spectrum and the Psychotic Disorders, the Anxiety and Depressive Disorders and the Personality Disorders.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

After completion of the course, participants will be able to:

·      Identify components related to professional use of the DSM-5 in the practice environment.

·      Identify the rationale and resulting changes between the DSM-IV-TR and DSM-5.

·      Identify several major diagnostic categories and the criteria for proper diagnostic assessments and evaluations.

·      Utilize the dimensional assessment strategy outlined in DSM-5 on selected disorders.

 

About the Presenter:

Dr. Sophia F. Dziegielewski, LCSW is a Professor in the School of Social Work at the University of Central Florida (UCF) in Orlando. She is also Chair of the UCF, Institutional Review Board which provides oversight for the protection of human subjects in university-related research. Throughout her academic, administrative and practice career she has been active in mental health practice and research maintaining her license and serving as an expert witness in the courts.

            Dr. Dziegielewski is the recipient of numerous awards, and supports her research and practice activity with over 130 publications, including 8 textbooks, 85 articles, numerous book chapters and hundreds of workshops and community presentations.  Her expertise in mental health diagnosis and treatment makes her a sought after presenter with seminars and workshops that span the globe.  She has also spoke to numerous professional groups across the United States about the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) highlighting both understanding and treatment strategy.  Her passion and expertise in diagnosis, assessment, ethical conduct in the research and practice setting and evidence-based treatment runs strong as she now continues to prepare professionals for utilizing the DSM-5.  Her most recent works on this topic are with John Wiley & Sons, having updated her book titled DSM-IV-TR™ in Action, 2nd ed. DSM-5 Update (2014) soon to be DSM-5™ in Action.  In addition, she is also under contract for another text that specializes in DSM-5 diagnosis, assessment and treatment planning in  children and adolescents.
