Debt collection: What Social Workers Need to Know          

Presenter: Craig Barnes, JD, Memphis Area Legal Services, Inc.

Memphis Area Legal Services, Inc. (MALS) provides free legal assistance and representation in civil (non-criminal) matters to eligible clients in Shelby, Fayette, Tipton and Lauderdale counties in Tennessee.  MALS also provides community education and outreach in those counties.

MALS holds a monthly Consumer Advice Clinic hosted by an attorney to assist individuals in navigating through the web of consumer debt collection.  This clinic arms clients that have a credit or collections issue with useful and valuable information and advice. 

Objectives:

 

·         Participant will learn about debt problems, credit and collections issues.

·         Participant will understand debt management options.

·         Participant will gain knowledge of consumers’ rights under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act

Craig Barnes, JD, is Managing Attorney for Consumer Unit at Memphis Area Legal Services. Mr. Barnes received his undergraduate degree from Duke University in 1996 and his J.D. from Saint Louis University School of Law in 2000. Craig began at Memphis Area Legal Services, Inc. as the NCLC Brooks Consumer Law Fellow in 2005.
